La ville de Wilhelmshaven inclut maintenant les villes de Rüstringen, Heppens et Neunde. Wilhelmshaven includes now Rüstringen, Heppens and Neunde. En 1869, le roi Guillaume I de Prusse inaugure le port et donne son nom à la ville qui commençait à se former. In 1869 the King Wilhelm I of Prussia officially opened the port and gave the city his name. Avec ses 94 500 habitants Wilhelmshaven est aujourd'hui la plus grande base navale d'Allemagne.  Today , Wilhelmshaven with his population of 94500, is the largest naval site in Germany.
